Dave Bullard - Like Him

The Spike Weed's Thoughts (repeat of link from the home page) - http://ivo.co.za/2008/04/11/bullard-burns-at-the-stake/

This column is hardly racist
This column is hardly racist.
It pretty much paraphrases what is in the book “Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jared Diamond. Simply put the column points out that South Africa was going to be colonized no matter what. The Bantu were conquered by Europeans who had guns and steel. A stronger civilization will displace a weaker one. The fact is that the Bantu (blacks) had just conquered/displaced the Koi-San. The Koi-San were still hunter gatherers and the Bantu had agriculture.
That’s not racist. The Bantu civilization was never going to survive contact with a more advanced civilization.  If the Bantu were left alone, which was never going to happen – South Africa under Bantu civilization represents a power vacuum that has to be filled, then without doubt they would be conquered sooner or later.  How they would do/have done/responded if another civilization did the conquering is pure speculation. Like novels in which Germany wins WWII.
You cannot fire people for pointing out the obvious.

A Sad Day!
Our thanks are added to those which will surely pile up! I can now discard the appointments section un-browsed.

David, I first lived in Africa - Nigeria - in 1965, 3 years after independence.  That is 43 years ago.  I can assert with authority that absolutely NOTHING has improved in that country since then and many things have deteriorated.  Unlike some, I actually like Nigerians and admire their tolerance and sense of humour.  But, although your wording on Sunday was um, er, a little indiscreet, the thrust of the argument I support totally.

What a Champ!
I would just like to say thank-you to David for making my Sunday mornings so much better. I have always enjoyed your columns and hope you continue to write for us! Everyone has the right to free speech and so too does Dave. All the best for your future!

Kind Regards

"Big Fan"

Go David!
Well done David Bullard! Thank you for saying what every other white South African has been too scared to mention. Instead they whisper behind cupped hands how our motherland is withering away at the hands of its ‘new’ South Africans.
As a writer myself, I am unable to secure permanent employment in the field. Instead equal opportunity employers are freely obliged to employ an incumbent whose first language is not English. Perhaps this is the very reason why Sunday Times editor Mondli Makhanya allowed David Bullard’s article to be published.
As the rest of the white South African population, I have seen this beautiful country of ours (and it is ours) decay as its ‘guardians’, used to herding cattle and sitting idyll on paint tins, have allowed South Africa to rot away.  Recently reported on a controversial television programme , 20,000 white South Africans are immigrating every month. Without the skills, brainpower and experience of the ‘previously advantaged’ our indigenous comrades will be sitting in their own darkness.
I, for one am immigrating to the greener, water-logged pastures of the United Kingdom to give my child a fighting chance to meet her full potential and not be stifled by the retarded curriculum that will eventually do away completely with mathematics, since only 2.4% of matriculants graduate with higher grade mathematics. As a mother, I have to give her the sanctity not to be stabbed with blunt-nosed scissors in her classroom, to not be raped to cure some savage of his HIV status and to not be judged by the colour of her melanin-deficient skin and straight hair. If the Human Rights Commission served its purpose properly, BEE, EE, AA and every other vowel-enriched acronym would be fairly seen as discriminatory against the ‘white man’.
The rest of the world looks on in awe, pumping endless funds into African outstretched hands. What they don’t see is the apathy, laziness, stupidity, the lack of ambition and interest and other aspects typical of their ‘kultcha’. Leave Africa to the Africans – it will surely soon be stolen, lost or broken.

Just about everyone who commented on this article makes me sick. How far we still have to go in this country...David Bullard was at least given the brief to be controversial, what are all of your excuses for defending racism??

The original article in the Sunday Times by David Bullard - a master of irony and satire - caused a major fracas.
His brief was "be controversial."
He was fired for this article ! The beginning of the end of Free Media.
He also had to apologise personally to Zuma who sued him for crimen injuria.
He now writes for Richmark Sentinel and Business Day.

He was wrong in one aspect - African Tribes have and will - never live in harmony. They would rather kill each other and kidnap the maidens.
"Live in peace" ? ! ?
South Africa is the most violent nation on earth.
It is not a country for cowards - to survive you need guts and courage.
More so in 2010.

@Nduna Zincume: oh my goodness that is utter rubbish. The blacks were happy? In this kind of society your children die often, there is drought and famine and er, ethnic cleansing. This is 'normal', not only related to africa, but happier? That is a very romantic and naive view of pasturalist/ agricultural living.

its bad now, it would be bad then.

Hi Raboebie,
You are quite right - "Kill the Farmer, Kill the Boer" is not racist - but this column is! How hypocritical!

I doubt all the comments below are accurate about Black Africans being HAPPY. That's junk. I very much doubt that. Watch any episode of SURVIVOR and you'll see it is not fun.

Plus, I doubt the blacks were living in harmony because there was plenty of warfare going on and regular raiding. Don't forget the Transvaal was depopulated by the Zulus annihilating their enemies. And all along West Africa Blacks were catching other blacks and selling them into slavery.

No. I doubt very much blacks were "happy" in a way that would make sense these days.

But, I assume everyone is happy now that David Bullard has been FIRED for this article. Quite sickening really. So much for "freedom of speech" hey?

Here is the article about his firing:-
NEW: Afro-Realism: S.Africa's best Satirical Journalist David Bullard fired for his 19th century "racist" views

I love his new term: "Afro-Realism!" Cool! I love it!

I really can't see the so called racism in the article, but only a very possible "if" reality. But I guess if you want to see racism you will.

I think in any way that I can do with sitting in a cave entrance with a small fire going, staring out over the African landscape with animals grazing..... That will be bliss, peace, freedom.
Don't no for how long before my western need to develop will force me to start modify my cave to be more practical and comfortable. Like a nice sliding door that may keep out the wind, a fireplace with a chimney, nice bed and a few partitions.

Sorry,... suppose to sit in front of the cave doing nothing, and if somebody show me to improve the place I must call him a racist and decline the TV and car and medicine he offered me.

Hi Nduna:

I am not disagreeing with you when you said the black men were happy. But life was no picnic: diseases, child mortality, wars, famines etc.

Interestingly enough, if the Chinese had colonized Africa instead of the Europeans, I believe the Blacks would be far worst off than there are now.

Mondli Makhanya was wrong to fire the author. The uncolonised Africa sounds like a pretty nice place to live. The way of the West is nice for many. The way of the African is just fine for Africa. There can be no doubt that Africa would have developed very differently from what it is today. Africans live in harmony with nature.

If this is hate speech Id hate to think what "Kill the boer, kill the farmer is" oh, and "one bullet, one settler"

Oh, one more..... "Bring me my machine gun"

And as much as I hate to admit it; there seems to be truth in the article, Zanu PF supporters and "war veterans" are obviously content with a little patch of land and a cow or two as there is no further ambition for strive to revitalise the agricultural sector and re-institute Zim to "the breadbasket of Africa" it once was known as.

> Speaking on Talk Radio 702 on Friday morning, Makhanya said the column was "extremely, extremely, extremely offensive" and "totally against the values of the Sunday Times and the country".

Well Mondli (Makhanya), the truth hurts!

But the good news is that (acknowledging the) truth can set you free indeed. So let's deal out a little more "prabda" below ...

Your paper, otherwise known as the "Sunday Crimes", is nothing but an exercise in arboricide, of which I shall no longer be a blind-eyed participant.

I judge any paper not by its accuracy (which is deteriorating daily), or by its news (I get the *REAL* news on Sky or CNN), but by the quality of its editorial comment. Without David Bullard I have no further interest in 101 pages of off-white parchment and off-black imprint.

It's like the other big fiasco in this country, Eskom, the inheritance has finally all been spent and we sit with a set of near-decrepit capital plant and probably completely decrepit human capital.

Is this what Mandela meant when he preached reconciliation among all races? David Bullard's article can only incite racial hatred & intolerance in this country. This is hate speech. Let me tell you something: criminals can read very well and they will use every excuse in the book - including this article -to commit serious crime.

Hi Lars

One thing that David does not acknowledge in the article is that fact that blacks were happy. They might not have been aware of the gold or any other thing that he is pointing out to, but the fact is black man was happy. The very things that we have discovered have made us to be greedy, unsatisfied, jealous and the list is endless.

I was thinking about this for some time now.
If we were not beaten down and have to stand up again,
we would just stay the guilty party.

Now the world can see what the truth is,.. if their eyes are open.

Thanks Lars

Hi Brian,
This article by David Bullard is brilliant.

It points out the ridiculous nature of the Far Left's arguments against Colonialism.

The Blacks benefited plenty - and the spoilt rotten Blacks of South Africa benefited more than anyone on this continent.

If the Whites had not come, the Blacks of South Africa would have fought among themselves for centuries with nothing to show for it.

Hi Lars,
thanks for the lovely compliment for all of us:-
I saw that...I'm amazed of the will power white people have in your country and that there are still millions of you left in South Africa.

But we're not as strong as our forefathers and the earlier generations were. But we're working on it.

You know the South Africans, Portuguese, South West Africans and Rhodesians were all beaten down by the rest of the world all together. We had the cr*p kicked out of us by everyone on the planet. We thought we had nothing left to live for. We thought we would never stand a chance again.

The Afrikaners were like that after the Anglo-Boer war. But they rose again and did even greater things, until they were defeated again in 1994.

For the Rhodesians it was a first experience. We lost. We lost EVERYTHING and ALL HOPE. But the SPIRIT remained... and it remained strong. And it just grew STRONGER. Now we know we've survived. The Afrikaners are starting to come right too. The rest of White South Africans need to come around to it too.

I think our survival has proven to us, that we were laid low by the whole world but our spirit has survived and we're much stronger in spirit than before.

Since the Rhodesians did not have a long history like the Boers, for them the loss of Rhodesia was a first, and it left us all completely convinced that this is the end, and we'll never rise again. But the last 20 years has shown that we're not broken. Our spirit is back. It is back in the form of support for the MDC, but our spirit is there, and the Blacks now WANT US around. The Blacks too have realised our value.

History will show, I believe, that Robert Mugabe made a hideous mistake in 2000. The entire history of Africa, I believe, will change as a result of what he did. Mugabe has actually unleashed the very forces (among the BLACKS!) that may undo everything that Black so-called Liberation stood for. Mugabe has done more damage to the Black race than any other Black leader. He and his fellows just have not realised it yet and they all think he's their hero. He will be their very undoing.

Whites in SA have been hit with so much White guilt - from every conceivable angle, its amazing any of them can think straight any more.

But the Afrikaners have been through tougher times than the Rhodesians and they have a longer history which they can be rightly proud of. And if they will look into their history they will find the inspiration they need.

We have the potential for much more if we will only emulate and acquire the strength that our forefathers had.

David Bullard is no militant. But he is a very bright fellow and a brilliant (and hillarious) journalist.

I thought he wrote this with real style and pointed out the ridiculousness of the Black position on Colonialism.

What I really loved was the ending with the Chinese ships and aircraft arriving. Bullard's point is that even if Whites did not colonise Africa, the Chinese (or the Indians - don't forget them - they're a future super-power too) - will.

The Blacks would have been even more unprepared for the modern world if the Whites had not colonised Africa.

And let me tell you, in Zimbabwe, more and more Blacks are realising the value of Whites and they want Whites among them. More and more Blacks in Africa are quietly starting to realise the value of Whites. Its still in its infancy... but there could be a change of consciousness (which Mugabe, through his actions, will be speeding up) slowly beginning as the Blacks look around themselves and realise the reality.

I hope Lars that in the future, the few million whites and the few million ex-pat whites will stand together stronger and firmer.

The future of the World's biggest (Or 2nd biggest?) continent is at stake.

Glad to see that David Bullard is still proving that the pen is mightier than the sword. Just think though, no permanent buildings, just mud and wattle huts, a life expectancy of only 35 to 40 years (they are on the way back to that now), massive numbers of deaths from diseases such as malaria and the tetse fly and droughts common, millions never see the sea as it is too far to walk, and so on. The list is almost endless with the joy that lack of knowledge brings and it was only a very short 4 to 500 years ago.

For the men though, the women do all the menial work in the fields while the men sit around talking and drinking beer made by the females apart from the occasional forage for women and slaves a a fairly close village of another tribe.

Best of all, no extra taxes levied because politicians are screaming out about global warming, the natural periodical event due to solar activity that no one can stop, just prepare for it.

No power cuts and no moaning about the price of fuel, and no worries because there are no newspapers because no one knows how to read and write anyway.

It is all a big NO-NO isn't it?

"Uncolonised Africa wouldn't know what it was missing".

Imagine for a moment what life would be like in South Africa if the evil white man hadn’t come to disturb the rustic idyll of the early black settlers.

Ignored by the Portuguese and Dutch, except as a convenient resting point en route to India. Shunned by the British, who had decided that their empire was already large enough and didn’t need to include bits of Africa.

The vast mineral wealth lying undisturbed below the Highveld soil as simple tribesmen graze their cattle blissfully unaware that beneath them lies one of the richest gold seams in the world. But what would they want with gold?

There are no roads because no roads are needed because there are no cars. It’s 2008 and no one has taken the slightest interest in South Africa, apart from a handful of botanists and zoologists who reckon that the country’s flora and fauna rank as one of the largest unspoilt areas in a polluted world.

Because they have never been exposed to the sinful ways of the West, the various tribes of South Africa live healthy and peaceful lives, only occasionally indulging in a bit of ethnic cleansing.

Their children don’t watch television because there is no television to watch. Instead they listen to their grandparents telling stories around a fire. They live in single-storey huts arranged to catch most of the day’s sunshine and their animals are kept nearby.

Nobody has any more animals than his family needs and nobody grows more crops than he requires to feed his family and swap for other crops. Ostentation is unknown because what is the point of trying to impress your fellow citizens when they are not impressible?

The dreaded Internet doesn’t exist in South Africa and cellphone companies have laughed off any hope of interesting the inhabitants in talking expensively into a piece of black plastic. There are no unsightly shopping malls selling expensive goods made by Asian slave workers and consequently there are no newspapers or magazines carrying articles comparing the relative merits of ladies’ handbags.

Whisky, the curse of the white man, isn’t known in this undeveloped land and neither are cigars. The locals brew a sort of beer out of vegetables and drink it out of shallow wooden bowls. Five-litre paint cans have yet to arrive in South Africa.

Every so often a child goes missing from the village, eaten either by a hungry lion or a crocodile. The family mourn for a week or so and then have another child. Life is, on the whole, pretty good but there is something vital missing. Being unaware of the temptations of the outside world, nobody knows what it is. Fire has been discovered and the development of the wheel is coming on nicely but the tribal elders are still aware of some essential happiness ingredient they still need to discover. Praying to the ancestors is no help because they are just as clueless.

Then something happens that will change this undisturbed South Africa forever. Huge metal ships land on the coast and big metal flying birds are sent to explore the sparsely populated hinterland. They are full of men from a place called China and they are looking for coal, metal, oil, platinum, farmland, fresh water and cheap labour and lots of it. Suddenly the indigenous population realise what they have been missing all along: someone to blame. At last their prayers have been answered.

Bullard Tells It Like He saw It

2011-06-01

Writer David Bullard vowed on Wednesday to appeal a ruling in favour of the Sunday Times, which fired him for an allegedly racist column four years ago.

"The judgment is nonsense," Bullard said in a telephonic interview.

"It is not based on the law... We have six weeks to respond and we will be taking it to a higher court."

Bullard was responding to a ruling by a statutory council in favour of Avusa Media, which rejected his argument that he was an Avusa employee at the time of his dismissal.

The statutory council found that he was independent contractor for Avusa.

Avusa editor-in-chief Mondli Makhanya declined to comment on the judgment.

Bullard said he would now take the matter to the Labour Court, which last year referred his case to the statutory council.

"They [Avusa] think that I'm going to go away. I do not go away. I'm going to screw them over," he said.

Bullard said he was not fighting the case for financial reasons and that he would donate any compensation money to charity.

He wrote a weekly Out to Lunch column for the Sunday Times from 1997, but was dismissed in April 2008 after his controversial piece titled "Uncolonised Africa wouldn't know what it was missing".

In this column, he imagined life in South Africa "if the evil white man hadn't come to disturb the rustic idyll of the early black settlers".

Bullard wrote: "[E]very so often a child goes missing from the village, eaten either by a hungry lion or a crocodile. The family mourn for a week or so and then have another child. Life is, on the whole, pretty good but there is something vital missing".

This, until Chinese investors arrived in Africa.

Bullard wrote: "Suddenly the indigenous population realise what they have been missing all along: someone to blame."

He was fired by Makhanya five days after the column was published.

At that stage, Makhanya told the Independent Online that the column was "extremely racist, inconsistent with the values of the Sunday Times and the Republic and extremely offensive".
